With one foot in the blues
and the other in the bayou the New Iberians CD "Bon Temps Rouge"
showcases the wide range of this versatile and popular Pacific
Northwest band.
Taking their name from the gulf coast town New
Iberia, LA, the Cajun capital and center of red pepper hot sauce
production, the six member group dishes up a tasty gumbo of Chicago
Blues, Northwest Rock and Roll, and Louisiana Zydeco. From the opening
bars of "Hello Josephine," a sizzling, zydeco rework of Fats Domino's
classic, the band's strong rhythm section of rub board, drums, piano
and bass kicks into overdrive, while electric guitar, accordion,
harmonica and tenor saxophone
add to the spicy mix. The next two
tunes are originals, penned by front man Evan Shlaes. "Goin' to the
Levee," about Portland's flood of '96, is a driving, Dave Edmonds
rocker, while title song "Bon Temps Rouge" heads to New Orleans for the
tale of a scarlet clad femme fatal. Harmonica man Claes Amroth leads
the next number, Clifton Cheinier's "Black Snake Blues," followed by
another Shlaes original, R & B ballad "Terry Anne," a paen to true
love and good cookin'! Six songs round out the album, including two
more originals, plus covers of tunes by Ledbelly, Buck Owens, Bobby
Freeman and Johnny Nash.
The CD was recorded at Falcon studios
in Portland, Oregon and produced by renowned acoustic blues guitarist
Terry Robb, who also lends his considerable talent on rhythm and slide
guitar. Terry Robb's production credits include albums for John Fahey, John Callahan, and a W.C. Handy nominated album for Shiela Wilcoxson, . "Bon Temps Rouge" is the second release on his PsycheDelta label.
